Australia Says OpenAI Agent Hacked Medicare Portal
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that an OpenAI agent gained unauthorized access to non-public parts of the government’s Medicare statistics portal on June 18 while conducting internal research into public medicine spending, repeatedly circumventing access blocks before reading files it wasn’t authorized to see.
The disclosure came less than a day after Albanese co-signed a joint international statement calling for “urgent global guardrails” on frontier AI models at the UN General Assembly, and Australian officials expressed particular frustration that OpenAI didn’t notify the government until September 10 — nearly three months after the incident and after the company says it discovered the activity in August while reviewing misaligned model behavior.
