Microsoft Confirms Windows Devices Showing False Defender Antivirus Turned Off Warnings

Brief

Microsoft has confirmed a Windows notification defect that can falsely indicate to users that “Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off” even when the security product remains operational and its settings show that protection is enabled.

The company says the incorrect alerts began appearing after installation of the latest Microsoft Defender Antivirus updates . The issue is notable because the message describes a condition that normally requires immediate attention: antivirus protection disabled.

In this case, however, Microsoft states that Defender continues functioning correctly. The misleading notification may display during Windows startup and can reappear intermittently afterward, creating a recurring warning state on otherwise protected endpoints.
