Windows Defender Update for 0-day Vulnerability Breaks Virus Scans
Brief
Microsoft Defender has been aborting Quick, Full, and Offline virus scans after a cluster of Security Intelligence updates reached Windows PCs on August 18, 2026, leaving home users and Defender for Endpoint admins without a reliable malware check.
Community testers now treat the outage as a bad definition rollout. Some Reddit users go further and argue it followed a hurried attempt to blunt ShieldBreak , a Defender zero-day published after Microsoft’s August 2026 Patch Tuesday .
Reports collected by Neowin, CyberInsider, Reddit, and Microsoft Q&A describe the same sequence. A Quick or Full scan starts, then Windows Security says the threat service has stopped and asks the user to restart it. Restarting does not make the next scan finish.

Offline scans hang around 90 to 93 percent.
